How to Build a Audience on Social Media

Social media is, without a doubt, one of the fastest ways to drive awareness and sales for your small business. But, it isn’t as easy as hitting ‘post’ on a beautiful picture and watching the followers stream in. These platforms run on algorithms and they force you to play by their rules.

Here is how we recommend you get started so your first social campaign can be a success.

Step 1: Choose the Right Social Media Platform.

Think about your ideal customer and where they might find their information.

Instagram and Facebook (Meta)

This is a great place if your target consumer is a broad group of people and your business really thrives on its visuals.

TikTok

TikTok is the platform that is best suited for businesses that can serve customers anywhere in the country or world such as ecommerce businesses.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is perfect if your target audience is fellow business people.

Step 2: Think About Your Ideal Customer and Create for Them

Are they interested in your story, or are they drawn in by your delicious pastries and cocktails? Put yourself in their shoes, what makes them tick?

Then create content for them!

Instagram and Facebook (Meta)

Videos are king but if you’re not comfortable doing that, start with a carousel. Post multiple photos in the same post to bring more eyeballs to your page.

TikTok

Casual videos do best here. Turn the camera around and talk to your audience!

LinkedIn

While images and videos work on LinkedIn, this is also a great place to post text. Unleash your inner bard.

**Pro Tip** Remember that your ordinary is your customer's extraordinary. Pick something casual that you do every day and film yourself doing it as a start. Since it's something you do everyday, there's no pressure to get it right today - you can always refilm it later. And if people like the video and stick around for more, you can always repeat it.

Step 3: Stay Consistent

The algorithms and your audience love consistency. It doesn’t need to be a rigorous schedule but give yourself a rough outline. If you tend to post 3 times per week, try to keep that up to build some familiarity and create expectations.

You don't have to always post the same types of content but a great barometer is to think about the things you care about and create content around.

Step 4: Social Media is a Two-Way Street

The conversation on social media doesn’t end after you hit ‘post’. Respond to everything - every DM, comment, and story mention - even if it's just with an emoji. The platforms want to see that you are generating conversation - that's how they decide which posts to push out and which not to.

Bonus Step 5: Partner and Collaborate

Once you have the basics down, consider working with an influencer or other business to create some mutually beneficial results. Work on a giveaway with an influencer to share something as simple as a gift card but make sure it's worth people's time.

Remember that you're trying to capture people's attention in the middle of a very busy world. You have to make sure your content has an impact.
